This night was amazing, and every band that played added to the overall magical vibe in the best ways. First off was our pals from Sioux City, It Really Is. Starting off a night with fast and loud punk music is my favorite way for a show to start 10/10 times, and these angsty babes did not disappoint. When I had seen It Really Is last time, the venue was having technical difficulties and I wasn't able to hear any of Jenn's vocals, so that was an extra treat for me, and while their instrumentals are rad and what you'd expect, Jenn's voice really brought it all together.
Next, one of my favorite, ever-growing local groups, Ch6r6z6rd took the stage, filling Total Drag with chunky synthesized dance beats and heartfelt songs about wrestling and candy and booze. Half singing, half yelling into a megaphone, with plenty of different sounds going on from each member, Ch6r6z6rd is always a dance party to remember.
Honestly, I didn't know what to expect from Ed Schrader's Music Beat as I stood at the front of the stage, watching the two men setting up the stage. I had listened to half of their newest album, Riddles, and liked what I heard, but honestly hadn't connected with it.
However, within the first few moments of their set beginning, I was immediately entranced.
Ed's voice was deep and strong and he knew exactly how to use it, and I was immediately hooked. As I'm thinking back on the night, shivers are running down my spine. It was truly ~magical~ and exactly what I was needing that night. They had an amazing lighting setup that, while definitely making my job harder, provided for some amazing, ethereal shots that make it seem like we were in a completely different venue.
This is one of those shows that felt almost spiritual in the essence of it; I was constantly torn between trying to capture every single moment that was happening and letting my camera hang limp at my neck while I fully sank into the music and energy around me. It was beautiful and I feel fortunate to not only have experienced such a show, but to have been able to capture a sliver of the night to share with you all.
Ch-ch-ch-check the rest of the photos from the night below, and stay rad.
